PC memory compatability: Intel and AMD?

Occasionally, when I have been shopping on-line for memory sticks (such as a 2GB DDR) for a PC motherboard, I have met the remark "Use only with AMD MoBos and processors; do not use with Intel ones". I am puzzled by that remark. Is it valid? And if so, why?
