No sound after driver updates.

  Lewie 14:20 31 Mar 2020

Hi all. I stupidly used Driver 'Easy' to update several drivers. After installing the latest sound card driver for my Creative SB X-Fi card no sound was heard. I've tried uninstalling etc, no joy. When I go in to 'Manage audio devices' I can click on any tab except the 'recording' tab. It then 'hangs'. I use task manager to shut it down and get the message "Windows Shell Common DLL is not responding"

The problem details are thus

Description: A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

Problem signature: Problem Event Name: AppHangB1 Application Name: shell32.dll Application Version: 6.1.7601.23806 Application Timestamp: 591331f3 Hang Signature: 8701 Hang Type: 22528 OS Version: 6.1.7601. Any clues?

There's a driver for it here.

Link works fine but you'll need to scroll down to the bottom and select your OS and submit.

Thanks for the replies. Even though I ticked receive notifications I didn't get any?

Anyway, FSC scannow refuses to run stating Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service INDSTR: Cannot open C\:Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

x-13 I'll take a look.

right click cmd prompt select Run as Administrator

I always run stuff as administrator. I've even tried a bat file that is meant to run SFC and save a notepad file to desktop. That file is always blank. Even if there's nothing wrong it shouldn't be blank.

do you have a win 7 DVD or USb to boot from to attempt the sfc from that?

Lewie, it's highly likely that a Windows "System Restore" will fix your problem - especially as its onset is so recent. If you're not familiar with it then go to this website, scroll down to the "How to Use System Restore in Windows 7....." section, then follow the instructions. Pick a date that predates the onset of your problem but don't go further back in time than you need to. You won't lose any personal data such as documents, emails or pictures etc.

Finally, please don't try to update your drivers again unnecessarily. If your hardware devices are working fine then there's no good reason to mess around with their drivers. 1]: [click here
