laptop stopped working after the windows 10 update

Today my laptop told me that it needs a major update. Because I had no issues with this update on my pc I accepted and headed for lunch. However, my laptop doesn't work anymore after the update. I logged into my account only to receive this error "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop is unavailable". I found a solution to fix this and indeed I got all my icons back. The thing is, nothing works. When I try to run a program, nothing happens. When I click on the windows button, nothing happens. Even explorer doesn't work. This is all due to the latest update, because the laptop worked perfectly fine before. When I restart it, it runs the update again and then I'm stuck in the same situation as described above. Any tips?

download the boot media from MS and run the update from that

I tried that but got 0x80080005-0x90017 error. That should be connected to space on the drive, but there is more than enough space.
