Laptop frozen in Windows Update

I've been asked to look at a friend's Dell Aspiron M5110. First logon was easy. Quick, clean. I ran a full McAfee scan with no problems shown. The second later attempt to logon showed the quick Dell screen followed by 'Resuming Windows' then the blue Windows Update screen. "Please do not power off... etc", then "Installing update 32 of 40" was displayed. That's now locked on the screen (Three attempts lasting 3 to 4 hours each failed to let it complete). I finally switched the power off.

Now it's refusing to shut down! I've put power back on to save the battery.

Any help to get me into the machine would be gratefully received.
