Laptop freezes after logging in following update

  green_elephant_8 22:39 15 Jun 2017

I have an 18 month old HP Pavilion that has run Windows 10 since purchase. Past updates have completed without a problem. However following an update last night I can log in but as soon as the desktop appears and any button is pressed the screen freezes. The cursor can still be moved bit it only displays the rotating circle loading icon cursor and nothing can be pressed. After about 5 minutes the following error message appears: "The instruction at 0x00007FFA615645F referenced memory at 0x0000755A5A8C1D34. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc000000e." No matter what button is pressed the screen goes black indefinitely. I have tried system restore beyond the date when the update was performed but this failed with an 'unsuccessful' error message. Any thoughts/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated as at the moment my laptop is useless! Thanks.
