i-Pods not recognised

Friend got 2 4gb ipods for him and wife. They both work fine on XP but on Vista PC, one is recgonised OK and works fine, but the other will not recognise. Shows in device manager but not as an ipod, ad with exclamation mark. He is using the latest version of i-tunes, the ipods are the same kind although the one that doesn't work is a bit older. As I say, he can plug it into XP laptop and works fine. Any ideas?

Yup, I find my iPod's interface with iTunes and Vista flaky, despite protestations from Apple that there are no issues. Try one of the third-party apps, though I wish Apple would sort out iTunes, I do like it for managing my iPod.

Kate B - can you point me in the direction of the 3rd party apps you are referring to, please
