Right click on your Network Icon on taskbar next to clock - select Open Network & Sharing Center - click Network (Home Network) - make your selection - ie:Home Network

Thank you for responding - unfortunately we've been there - several times - when I open sharing centre the map I get is

This PC - Unidentified network -x- Internet with active networks being Unidentified Public Network

there is no option to select home network???

I keep being referred back to changing the networks location type from public to home in the sharing centre - but I simply cannot find how to so this - when I do open a page in advanced sharing settings and change the sharing options in home I am unable to click on 'save changes' as it is greyed out??

Try this right click on command prompt, run as admin. then when the command prompt pops up type in netsh winsock reset catalog and hit enter. Then you will have to restart your computer.

Alternatively try a System Restore if you have one to just prior to the problem occurring.

I am unable to click on 'save changes' as it is greyed out??

From that screen do you have Turn on Network Discovery selected?

Thanks just trying that now - already done a system restore - to the point yesterday when I updated windows!! Fingers crossed this will work.

Nope! Still showing as Unidentified network - Public Profile! Wifi signal being pickup at full strength - but simply not connecting to internet through this public profile - whatever is this?

  Stressed Mum 13:18 11 Mar 2012

Obviously something needs changing on the network settings - how?

windows firewall is showing that protection is on for both home and public. Home network not connected - public network is connected.?? Where to go from here?
