External HD Jumper Settings

  kiaora 17:50 10 Jul 2008

Hi all, driving me mad this, I've got a 250GB Western Digital HD that I want to use with my laptop in an external HD case with USB2 connection.

It is a new HD to be used for the first time, could someone please help me with the Jumper setting, I've got no idea, Master, Slave, Cable select etc and also do I have to do anything else for the disk to be 'seen', if you see what I mean.

Thanks for any help,

Start windows and then plug it into a usb port.

See if windows finds it, in the bottom right task bar.

Then right click computer > manage > disk management.

See if it is listed in the new window.

If it is, right click the space and pick either new volume or format.

When this is done it should then appear in my computer.

As its now an external drive, you should not need any jumpers. If this fails,Cable Select is pretty universal and should work.
