Is it possible to install Windows XP on a Vista machine to produce a dual boot operating system. That way I can have the best of both worlds.

you will need to remove vista by formating the disk or partition, install xp then reinstall vista ,it will ask you if you want to keep xp on a separate partition, or upgrade to vista

No you don't. There's no need to do that.

You will need a Vista dvd to restore the boot record.
