Anyone prompted to install new Update Agent

That's a relief. It's still doing it's best to scare me. Just booted up now, after all this of course, and saw an on screen message ( I was not paying attention -- didn't expect anything like this ) something like 55/5 ??? registry something ? and it was gone. Then it went to "configuring updates" stage 3 of 3. Weird it never asked for a restart or showed the stage 1 and 2 parts either earlier in the day.

How weird is that. Will see if it checks automatically for updates today. I have it set to check but not to install without asking.

yes i've had changes to the registry at startup 3 or 4 times over the last 18 months,must just be something microsoft does every now and then

All does seem OK. I am going to tick this one as resolved but if anything else happens I will add to this thread. I must image the drive as well, I don't want to go through all this again.
And it all seemed to start with me installing a USB PIC programmer from Microchip -- which is Vista tested.
All good practice for the next time.
