Why Does Ice Float

Water reaches its maximum density at 4°C (40°F). As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense. On the other hand, most substances are most dense in their solid (frozen) state than in their liquid state. Water is different because of hydrogen bonding. So how did that come about. as it lets fish and other living thing survive under it

Seven eighths of icebergs are unseen 'n' underwater - and therefore not floating in the normal sense of floating.

PS. Why are Iceberg lettuces so named?

Because Californian growers shipped vast quantities of them in railcars packed with (but not in) even vaster quantities of ice to keep them fresh.

Icebergs do float "normally", at least according to Archimedes (slightly before Arthur Mee- whose 1905 books I inherited once), as Ice is only a bit less dense than water. See

Archimedes Principle

jb - I am now 'a bit less dense' on icy matters, thanks for that ;o)

We where up in the arctic circle Automotive cold environment testing last week ,one of the items we monitored was header tank levels. The temperature ranged from -10 to -30 and even thought the coolant did not freeze because of additives the levels changed dramatically ,as it got colder the level dropped and we expected the fluid to possibly expand the level returned to same position once engine was up to operating temperature the next few weeks we will study the data and maybe clarify the reasons behind these results. Interesting
