Trump names Gen James 'Mad Dog' Mattis

as his new Defence Secretary.

In common with his new boss. Mattis has consistently advocated a much more aggressive approach when dealing with Iran's government - one he refers to as “the single most enduring threat to stability and peace in the Middle East.”

There's only one spannerette in the works as far as the appointment goes - it's technically illegal. A 1947 national security law prohibited any US military General serving as Defence Secretary until he had been out of uniform for at least ten years.

That period was reduced to seven years in 2008, but Mad-dog didn't quit his job as Chief of central Command until 2013. Trump will obviously not see that as a problem - he will try to get Congress to agree to a waiver, but there will be opposition - not everyone is a Mad-dog fan.

"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

And then there is this, said about fighting the Taliban:-

‘It’s quite fun to shoot them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people.’

Alternatively though he has received the backing of Senator John McCain chairman of the armed services committee, who will conduct his confirmation hearing.

"He is without a doubt one of the finest military officers of his generation and an extraordinary leader who inspires a rare and special admiration of his troops," Senator McCain said in a statement.

"America will be fortunate to have General Mattis in its service once again."
