Screen Resolution Ratios

Picking up a comment on another thread ( click here ). I have just reduced the resolution on my Sony TFT 17" monitor from 1280x1024 to 1024x768 due to a bit of eyestrain. Circles are now a bit oval and people in photos are tall and thin. Does anyone know why the main screen size ratios change on this higher resolution from 4:3 to 5:4?

Please note that I'm not asking for help to resolve this (I'm not particularly worried), I'm just interested to know why the ratio was changed.

Just out of interest, where did you see the screen size ratios?

I didn't see them anywhere. I am aware of 4:3 being the standard for non-widescreen televisions and, obviously, from 800x600. The ratio for 1280x1024 was just simple maths.

I can understand the relatively new widescreen resolutions but I don't understand where the squarer 5:4 came from.
