I have a clock (big) with the time displayed in old numerals. I have always found it OK and no one else has ever mentioned or noticed it but my grand daughter of 8yrs at the time told me that it was wrong. What is the correct way to display the number 4 on a clock face or are there options.

It looks to be a pretty close Brexitesque split...

But it's not worth falling out over!

.....in addition why are the Roman numerals for 4,5,6,7 & 8 upside down and 3 & 9 on their sides? Clocks with Arabic numbers are all upright.

My watch has IIII for 4 but my two chiming clocks both have IV.

I have always understood that the IIII on a watch face is there to ensure optical balance. It simply looks better than IV on a small dial.
