The powerful earthquake that killed hundreds of people in Chile on Saturday probably shifted the Earth's axis and made days slightly shorter, a Nasa scientist has said. Skip related content

If the planet's axis did shift by 8cm during the quake, days would have shortened by 1.26 microseconds, Mr Gross calculated.

It seems to me the there is a possibility the any natural event and perhaps a few man made ones to may well affect everything else to a lesser or greater degree- much of it immeasurable- but there.
Take the tsunami effect - not so long ago in geological time and even in human memory too, such an event would appear 'Out of the blue' with no one knowing the cause-but now because of global measuring organizations- such things are monitored and warnings given-
