I don't know what you make of what this chap says but I recon he right The UK's social safety net has been "deliberately removed and replaced with a harsh and uncaring ethos", a report commissioned by the UN has said. Special rapporteur on extreme poverty Philip Alston said "ideological" cuts to public services since 2010 have led to "tragic consequences". The report comes after Prof Alston visited UK towns and cities and made preliminary findings last November.

Is Socialism now more popular than Capitalism in today's Britain?

It doesn't matter what the historical facts show, when people go to vote, they only think of their own personal situation at the current time, and how they will benefit personally, and capitalism hasn't been too kind to us plebs lately.

They say a week is a long time in politics. I note that the linked article in the last post is over 3 years old. I don't know if it would change anything or not if the question was asked now.

The age profile of the active contributors to this forum is probably nearer the group that views socialism unfavourably in the survey and many will have acquired property assets and pension benefits that the young can only dream of.

Well the gist of it still holds true.

Oresome - There is no hope of getting onto the property ladder for my generation. Absolutely none unless things change significantly.

Governments are failing on affordable housing these days. The waiting list for those looking for an affordable home has a backlog for a few years.

Properties are occupied before the builders even begin these days.

@rickf. You say - 'same old rhetoric' in reply to the FE's point about socialist governments but didn't notice where you named a country where socialism had improved living standards.

"same old rhetoric' in reply to the FE's point about socialist governments but didn't notice where you named a country where socialism had improved living standards"

My point is Socialism does not stand still. It's thinking is more progressive now. People seem to get stuck in the "reds under the bed" syndrome and equate that as socialism. Sweden is a socialist country and has a far higher standard of living than we have. I would accept though that over the years it has to some extent lost sight of it's direction. And don't use Venezuela as an argument, just in case, because that is a dictatorship. The extremes on both sides are the same as in communism=right dictatorship. What happens is when Socialism is mentioned people think communism.

"Ah... So we'd be wise to have a permanent Tory government then, but your acknowledgement that we're entitled to disagree with you, provided that we repent, is trully a great magnanimous gesture!"

Excuse me? I didn't say anything of the kind - you're making this up as you go along, and lapsing into rudeness as well. I responded to your inference that a socialist government would be good for us. I said nothing about Tory governments, and inferred nothing - you seem to have knee-jerked to the conclusion that a Conservative government is the only alternative to a Socialist one.

"It doesn't matter what the historical facts show,.."

Oh dear, it gets worse.

Historical facts show what people did in the past, and what happened as a result. Of course it matters. I really don't think I have ever before heard anyone say that historical facts don't matter.

"Same old rhetoric."

And the same old failure to back up something you've said when it's questioned. I had a feeling that would be the case.

FE, have just done so. Give us your wise thoughts.
