So will you opt out?

I will be saying no.

Its getting to the stage that I am getting rather paranoid as to whether I should use a computer, telephone or even switch on satellite television. Didn't Orwell mention something about this, all those years ago ;o)

I see that Phorm is using the good old American business technique of we-opt-you-in-and-you-have-to-opt-out-if-you-don't-want-it. Amazon are doing this on their site. A few weeks ago I ordered some books from them, and on the final page while checking my details I failed to notice I had been opted in joining a club they were running. They immediately debited my credit card to the sum of £49, and thanked me for joining. To their credit they cancelled the debit, and my membership to their club after I had sent them a very cross E-mail.

I think the practise is very sneaky.

I'm sure I saw a little free program somewhere on this site a couple of months ago which makes a nonsense out of phorm data. Can anyone remember where to get it?

This could lead to "domestic misunderstandings" if you happen to click a porn site "by accident".

will opt out, and I find it hard to understand why this ill-conceived plan is being rolled out at all.

It's about time that we all had a respite from the relentless tide of advertising and marketing pressure that constantly washes up our personal beach. We all have the right to choose what we will be subjected to in terms of invasions of our privacy, and I think the day is fast approaching when some advertisers will find their target turning on them if they don't stop being so intrusive.

I think that's already happening on this forum.

There have been some quite vitriolic threads about some of the more intrusive advertising, and I doubt if the offending advertisers have got much new trade.
