Olympics flagging....

An MSP has warned Scots travelling to Beijing for the Olympics that they may not be able to wave the Saltire in support of Scottish athletes.

that Scottish fans will completely ignore the ban on taking their national flag into Olympic venues, as will fans from all other participating countries, and rightly so.

If the Chinese authorities think they can stop people from demonstrating loyalty to their home nations, just because the Chinese government is paranoid about Tibet, they have another think coming. There are occasions on which it's necessary to allow actions to speak instead of words, and this is one of them. I confidently expect to see the Saltire on display alongside the flags of many nations in crowds at the Olympic venues.

Just try stopping us Welsh! :))

This is just one SNP MSP looking for a way to upstage the other parties' leadership contests.

Time to holler is when the first Saltire gets confiscated, or a Scot gets locked up.

I doubt you'll see any Tibetan flags there.

  Seth Haniel 10:06 05 Aug 2008

you won't see any flags ;)

Do you honestly think that the Chinese authorities can stop Tibetans from displaying their flag?

China will be in the brightest of possible spotlights over the next couple of weeks, and the Chinese government is acutely aware of it. The way that the organisers of the games react to events is going to be important to the success - or otherwise - of the games as a showcase for China.

Probably think it's one of theirs with the dragon on ;)

As you can see the Chinese are out to stop the Welsh as well.

  Quickbeam 12:40 05 Aug 2008

"The rule, believed to be aimed at potential Tibetans, independence demonstrators, effectively vetoes the Welsh and Scottish flags., traditionally seen atinternational events."

That's why I suggested the Tibetan flag ban. The Chinese don't accept Tibet as not being Chinese, therefore if you ban flags from all nations that aren't entering in their own right. The ban also just happens to include Tibet.

And they thought we wouldn't notice that...?

A spokesperson said that the ban on the Welsh and Scottish flags was introduces by the IOC and has nothing to do with the games being in Beijing...aye right, this will be the same IOC who colluded with the Chinese government over Internet censorship.
