The intelligence of senior management

Let me pose you this one. My son and his colleague are air conditioning installers, they work in London. The job is behind schedule and they are desperate to get it finished on time asking people to do overtime as they can’t get the right labour. They were both working on the ninth floor scaffolding, all netted up as required.

Big boss turns up and says they should be wearing wristbands attached to their tools in case they are dropped and bounce over the netting. OK, I can accept that on a health and safety issue but instead of asking them to use them he sent them home at lunch time as punishment, meaning half a days pay lost. They could not give a toss, nice sunny afternoon off and no point in doing Sat morning now as it will be basic rate. Who is the loser at the end of the day .

If, as you suggest, it is a site safety rule and they breached it they were lucky. Such a breach normally leads to loss of job in the construction industry. I would certainly have considered it.

Next time you go past a big site take a look at the site information signs. I'll be surprised if there's not one along the lines of "No hard hat/ear protection/ high vis - no job".

Very few small/medium enterprise construction contractors continue to trade for very long after a conviction for an H&S breach.

Ermm, seems remiss of them not to have tools tethered. Intelligence of air conditioning installers could be called into question.

They got off lightly!

If they had been told then they would have used them. OK you need to have some health and safety understanding but a simple "Use the straps" could have resolved it if you were unaware.

*leads to loss of job in the construction industry. *

It was not an intentional thing just not informed. Sack them, yes great idea so they go round the corner and get another job. Specialist stuff and not enough people which is why they are running behind schedule in the first place.

Intelligence of air conditioning installers could be called into question. If you want it done then educate them or they will go elsewhere. Perhaps that is why they have no labour. Nobody wants to work on this site for some reason, son and pal are going asap.

It's strange how in the building industry we can be sticklers for rules in one area, but as the inquiry into Grenfell exposes, other rules can be circumnavigated at will at all levels.

They shouldn't need to have been told. If they were experienced installers & used to working in that type of environment, then it should have been second nature for them. No excuses.

I think you're making excuses based on the fact that your son is involved. If someone else had posted a similar tale, your response might have been along the lines of some of those on here...

As in many cases, I'm afraid, ignorance of the law/rules is no excuse.

"As in many cases, I'm afraid, ignorance of the law/rules is no excuse."

Spot on. If they are experienced installers they should have know the rules.

........in this case is beyond criticism in my opinion.
