How to work out land size

I would like to know if anyone can tell me the easiest way to find the size of a piece of land. The last time I did this was at Tech College using metal chains and triangulation. Now we have modern technology I wonder it it could be scaled from a satellite image or found elsewhere.

I think you can do that in Google maps.

If you scroll down the bottom it tells you how.

I thought I would give it a try and measure the field next to where I live, it really works, the field measures about 14 acres.

This Google maps facility has been a godsend for contractors, developers, and surveyors.
