Prisoner in German escapes by mailing himself to freedom...

Great story. I had to smile (~_~)

  bluto1 21:29 14 Nov 2008

Me too, Pesala, but I think the chief warden is making excuses saying he had accomplices. This has the earmarks of a brilliantly conceived piece of opportunism. It's quite obvious there was no supervision at his place of work.

Must have read 'The great escape'.

Good job it didn't happen in this country. He might have got lost in the post.

  Pineman100 16:06 15 Nov 2008

In his situation, I might have tried the same thing.

Except I wouldn't have been able to afford the postage. :o(

He must have had accomplices, how would he seal the box from within...

  tullie 04:13 16 Nov 2008

When i was a prison officer abroad we had a prisoner who decided to hide in the truck that went round emptying the bins etc.Unfortunately,he dident realise that it had a compactor, the result was inevitable.

If this story is true, I'll eat my hat. Well, I won't really, but I can't believe this at all. The box must have been pretty strong to support the man's weight. What did the couriers think was inside it? It would have probably needed at least two people to lift it.
"it is a criminal offence in Germany to help somebody escape from jail." You learn something new every day!

If this man did really escape like this, I would imagine that it involved the authorities turning a blind eye.

"it is a criminal offence in Germany to help somebody escape from jail."

I wonder if there are any countries where it *isn't* a criminal offence?

The goods would have been loaded on by prisoners, not the courier
