I see another company is asking for financial help from our goverment & no doubt the "IN" word at the moment with these firm's is "Billions" not millions...i think if GB helps them its a huge misstake..we are already titering on the very edge of a "Empty Drawer" there's almost nothing left...

Corus aka the (old) British Steel were always going to find the market place difficult with major players in the Far East & Russia able to produce at lower costs.

The largest steel company in India, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and we're being asked to bail it out?

  GANDALF <|:-)> 08:22 10 Dec 2008

Isn't Corus owned by none other than Mittal, the richest man in the UK? He could consider re-mortgaging his £70m house in London for starters like many other business owners already have done.

Think you'll find it's owned by the Indian company, Tata, only just behind Mittal in the steel business.

Sorry for going slightly off subject,
but if you think this is a difficult decision for a UK government to make, just think how much more difficult it is for a USA government to make such a decision with such companies as General Motors and Ford all begging at the White Hose door for money.

Actually the success they get in America may well decide the future of motor manufacturing in the UK. Such it is with a global economy etc.

The begging bowl didn't help, when there was mass closures within the UK steel industry previously, and many people had to find and re-invent new work.

This was the same for the coal mines, but I notice that there are serious talks about re-introducing large scale opencast coal mining as a reserve for future energy supplies, because we cannot depend on present resources of energy manufacture.

At once upon a time, you use to have to pay for the disposal of a motor vehicle or certain forms of scrap. Then they became known as a sustainable commodity with a value tag. The scrap dealers were prepared to give you money for scrap, now it seems as though we are doing a repeat and going in a full circle 'again'.

As perhaps suggested earlier, 'the boss' of the steel company, is an extremely wealthy person!.
