Is Zone Alarm (The Free One) any better than the fire wall built into XP? If so Why.

Yes, because it checks for both outgoing and incoming communications - XP's firewall only checks incoming.

If a trojan gets onto your system (perhaps from an eail attachment) then XP's firewall will not prevent it from 'dialling out'.

Note that there are many other good free firewalls apart from ZoneAlarm - Sygate is one, and Google will find plenty more.
