New gaming PCs suck...power
Take one AMD dual-core Athlon 64 FX-60 CPU. Pair it with two high-end video cards in an SLI configuration. Overclock everything. What do you have? An expensive new computer that is unbelievably fast...and that draws so much electricity that even a high-end 600-watt power supply can't supply it. That's what we found when we tested two new PCs from custom PC builders Falcon Northwest and Velocity Micro. One solution: a brand-new, never-seen-before 1-kilowatt power supply. Does anybody really need this much power? Can anybody afford it? Check out our comparison.

Gamers seem to want amusement arcade facilities, so I suppose its a case of bigger the better!.

Personally I am not into this high powered gaming thing, so my 450w supply is quite adequate for the computer's need.

1KW what are they running, an electric fire?

With more power comes more het which needs more coolin fans that require power etc.
