New gaming PCs suck...power
Take one AMD dual-core Athlon 64 FX-60 CPU. Pair it with two high-end video cards in an SLI configuration. Overclock everything. What do you have? Gamers seem to want amusement arcade facilities, so I suppose its a case of bigger the better!.

Personally I am not into this high powered gaming thing, so my 450w supply is quite adequate for the computer's need.

1KW what are they running, an electric fire?

With more power comes more het which needs more coolin fans that require power etc.
