You can’t open two documents with the same name

  mick 00:10 04 Mar 2004

I have copied my files across from my old (98) computer to my new computer ( XP) using Office 98. When I try to open them I receive the message below. There is only one doument of this name on the hard drive.

Document with the name (name of document) is already open. You can not open two documents with the same name even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document either close the document that’s currently open or rename one of the documents

That's correct you cannot open docs with the same name twice. but if they are in different folders you could Alter the File Name like this as a Example

MyFileX.doc you could then open both files in two windows side by side

woodchip - "There is only one doument of this name on the hard drive."

mick -what version of Office (Office 98 doesn't exist for PCs)??
Is it a Word or Excel document?

Excel 97 - click here

Do you have any addins for Excel installed?

Also see click here

Try either re-registering Excel :

Close Excel and
Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver

then Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

or maybe:

turn off DDE for XLS files:

Windows Explorer
Tools | Folder Options
File Types
Find XLS in the list
Click into Advanced
Click on Open and Edit
Uncheck "Use DDE" and make sure the "Application Used" entry is something like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" "%1"

complete with the quotes around the path to the program and the %1 bit.

It is best not to have multiple documents with the same name.

Can only cause confusion.
