XP Won't Start!

  steadman7 15:40 15 Jul 2008

I’m having trouble with an XPPro PC. This started with a conflict between Zone Alarm and a recent MS update. Eventually the PC locked up on start up (trying to auto reinstall ZA I think), and will not start in Safe Mode either.

A ‘Repair’ install of XP produced the same result.

I can access the partition with Knoppix. Does anyone know if there is a file that I can edit, delete or rename which will enable XP to start.

Plan B is to do a full reinstall but I would have to capture all the data first (eg via a USB memory stick) as my friend, the owner, has no data back ups!!!. Also would need to follow up with drivers etc, so wish to avoid if poss.

If you did a Repair like this click here and it didnt work then you might have a hardware problem. Are there any errors shown or the BSOD?
