XP won't recognise modem & Device Manager Empty ?

I'm running XP Home Edition. After completing a routine AVG scan last night my system no longer detects or recognises my modem (Conexant Smart HSFi V92 56k Speakerphone PCI modem). Attempting to dial my ISP, I get an immediate message "Unavailable, Device Missing". I also noticed the list in my device Manager is empty??? To compound issues, I've attempted to install SP2 in the past which failed - during installation I get a message advising the O/S is too unstable to install SP2 ???

Sounds like I have a whole bunch of problems. Someone kindly suggested AVG may have corrupted a system file and I should run a "repair install" from the disk provided by my OEM (Dell) - failing that, to do a complete O/S re-install ?

Any advice, tips or guidance much appreciated.
