Xp wont allow printer driver installation.HELP!

I had a problem with my Lexmark Z54 so I decided to reinstall the printer driver. When I tried to do this I got the following error message:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose close to terminate the application.

Below it were two buttons "CLOSE" or "IGNORE"

If I clicked either of the buuttonds the driver would not install. I dowloaded the latest driver from the Lexmark website with exactly the same problem.

The printer has been running happily for two years till I suddenly had a spool error so I thought I would cure it by reinstalling the software.
Any ideas?
