XP Vista networking

  westglenn 15:47 01 Jan 2009

Good afternoon, I am looking for some assistance.

I have an XP laptop and a Vista desktop. The Vista desktop can access the XP laptop but the XP laptop can see the Vista desktop but I get the following message:

"\\XX-pc is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

I have setup User accounts on the Vista desktop.

When I try to connect directly to the IP address on the Vista machine through Internet Explorer, it timeouts.

Any advice what I need to do?

There are several things to try but first make sure the XP machine also has user accounts and importantly passwords on them too.

Thanks for feedback.

The User account is setup on the XP machine but I do not need to sign on with it.

It defaults into my administrator user.

I have both a Administrator and Guest account.

How do I set it up so that I can sign on through User account?

click here You need to do the following sections:

To make the Welcome screen available:
To change the security levels and assign passwords to these accounts:

I suspect on the second one you have only one account so just assign it a password and then reboot.

Any progress?

Sorry, haven't been able to respond.

Tried changing security levels and assigning passwords.

Seem to remember adding setup in Windows to bypass signon and log straight in.

Trying to find article in magazine around the house.

I will keep you posted.

I've been trying to solve this one for about a year, so I'm watching keenly!

Check your firewall permissions.
When I have had this sort of problem I have often traced it to a firewall snag.

Which firewall are you using?

Can you ping the Vista machine from the XP machine?
Can you see the Vista public folders from the XP machine?

Thank you all for responses.

It is working. I believe that this has resolved the problem.

The XP laptop is setup to automatically login with a specific userid.

On the Vista desktop I created a userid to match the automatic userid on the XP laptop.

The next time I tried to cannot to the desktop from the laptop it asked for a userid and password. Entered the userid and password from Vista userid. Connection no issues.

Hope this helps.
