Recently tried to upgrade from ME to XP Pro but recieved a message that "unable to do so because it could not locate a winlog.exe file."

Can anyone throw some light on what this file is or if there is a solution?

Thanks for your help.

I will not continue on this tread. I just wanted to know if the Dell recovery disc could be used.

From the answers my conclusion is that these recovery discs won't work and a full version of XP is needed.

AlanPCA, some restore disk will work! I've just checked the M/S knowledge base and found this answer.

Yes, you are right, Evesham supply "recovery" discs, but these seem to be identicle to a full XP cd.

Most though will just supply a disc which has a drive image on it. These will not work.

I have no idea which path Dell take, but it might be worth a check.

alcudia, yep! it's a confusing world with operating disk and restore or recovery disk. Why can't they make it more simple by just issuing a full CD. :o(

MESH tells me that their restart disc will not work with XP Upgrade.
