XP Update Flood

  owls 21:27 30 Sep 2003

I have just received notice of another 16 updates from the XP automatic update facility. Do I really have to keep on dowmloading and installing this flood or is there some way to find which ones really are essential so that I can ditch the rest.

Personally, I have turned automatic updates off.

I check in, on a reasonable regular basis, and read what the updates offered actually do. If it is something that I think would never cross my path, I forget it.

I do read security ones thoroughly!

Watch out for an email 'Microsoft Critical update' or similar it is not from Microsoft & is well stocked with trojans!

I've done the same as Chris the Ancient.

I'll just go and have a peek at what's new, thanks for the reminder!

Thanks Chris & Vog, also Aristo for the warning.
I already adopt Chris's Look & See policy but it's not ideal. The MS brief descriptions are usually unclear or unhelpful, so that means going to the KB article which is rarely in 'Plain English'. All very time consuming when all I realy need to know is: 'Is this update vital for a single home user (as opposed to Network Administrators) or can I file it under 'If it ain't broke don't fix it'.
Maybe PCA could regularly publish such a list!?
