xp update error

  [DELETED] 16:04 17 Oct 2003

My neighbour has xp home with ntl broadband. He has about 5 accounts set up. In his infinite wisdom he downloaded an update and now whenever you boot up and whichever account you select, you get an error saying the xp license cannot be verified and there is a problem with activation. The error code is 0x80004005.
You cant get into windows to check anything.
The ms support doesnt seem to have anything on this so I am now at a loss. I know his xp is valid, it came with his packard bell machine and the licence code is on the side of the case.

Many thanks

It let me in safe mode where I removed the updates and it sorted it out. Good old MS for rogue updates yet again

I gave up with these updates i turned them off i have put in SP1 that is all i have a good antivirus and firewall i have never been hacked todate and i have had a computer for eight years.

XP must be the most patched up OS system ever tobe
released by Microsoft never had these problems with W98 or WME and if you have todo a reinstall don't go there.
