XP security patch updates to large

  [DELETED] 14:25 26 Aug 2003

My wife has just purchased a laptop with XPhome pre installed. When went online to register was informed of a series of updates the total of which could take up to 4 hours to download. Is any way of having these patches and updates by post on a CD please?
Incidently whilst on line to Microsoft the system was attacked by a worm which Noton picked up but was unable to clean or repair without downloading more software to repair it.

If you go to the MS XP update site you can download the critical updates one at a time.

The largest update is probably SP1 which is available on the cover disc of some PC magazines and the magazines relating specifically to XP. Its also available on CDROM from Microsoft for a small payment.

Do you have a friend with a broadband connection you could borrow? Will then take significantly less time to download

Why can't Microsoft help out those of us who live in areas that have no chance of getting broadband to download these large updates by putting them on CDs. They could then distribute them to large computer stores for a nominal fee (or even free as it seems a lot of these updates are having to be put out due to Microsoft bugs.)
I think Microsoft could afford it seeing how much it costs us for each new system.

Also whilst downloading if you need to go offline or switch the PC off you can right clikc the Update icon at the bottom right and select "pause".

next time you switch on / log on select "resume" and it'll carry on....
