Have you tried System Restore?

Some information about the pc specification/make/model would help......and what were you doing before this happened?

What Symantec products were you using?

By the sound of it your pc has been restored to factory fresh condition......were you having any problems before the "crash" or were things rumming smoothly?

If your pc contains the full system backup on a hidden partition could someone have inadvertently invoked a full restore?

the PC is manf by multivision with AMD athlon 2800+ 2.09GHz 896 MB Ram Running XP home edition. All was working fine untill this one start up where it went back to factory settings-only unusual thing was horrible odd noise from hard drive as it powered up

Certainly sounds like hard drive failure is the cause of the problem. You could instal a new hard drive and load it with XP. Then fit the old drive as slave and see if you can recover your data.

If your bios has been set to default, then enter the bios and change the DATE and TIME to the correct date and time.
