XP Reinstallation problems

I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled my Windows XP Home Edition. I then went to download Windows Updates for XP. I managed to download Service Pack 1, but when it got to the point where it was being installed, (which should have taken approx. 6 minutes), it took over an hour. I am also having probelms installing my printer driver from the CD- it took forever and I finally gave up. In general, programs are taking ages to respond and I have to use the Task Manager to close them.
In addition, there is an unknown piece of hardware which I am being prompted to install but have no idea what it is.
I have an AMD Athlon XP 1600 processor. Hope someone won't mind going through my woes one at a time and help me sort them out!
