XP PRO won't Standby.

Hi all, I am unable to use Standby or Hibernate on my WinXP PRO SP2 PC. When I click on Standby or Hibernate the screen changes and displays a message: "preparing to Standby", then it hangs. I have to restart the PC to bring it back to life.
I have tried various tweaks in Power Options in the Control Panel but no success. When I try to save the settings a window opens that says: "Indicates To Revision Levels are Incompatible". Does anyone know what the message means and how the problem can be cured? Cheers.
PS , my PC spec is:
CPU,AMD XP 2800 Barton -------
RAM, 2x512 DDR 3200 Crucial---
Graphics, Radeon 9800 PRO-----
HDD, WD 80GB SATA-------------
BIOS, Award date Dec' 2004----
