XP Pro hotfix files

This may be a silly question, but can anyone tell me what these files are for? I appreciate that they help one to use older programs, but wonder if they have to stay on one's Add or Remove list permanently. In other words, can one remove them with impunity?

Advice will be appreciated.

i would think not otherwise no point in downloading them in the first place.

they are largely security fixes which help to protect your pc from vulnerabilities.

Thank You Johnny rocker. I think I understand now. Mind you, I did not dowload anything. These files (many) were apparently dowloaded automatically.

The fixes are listed there because they can be removed. However it might be foolish to do so.

If you are sure you don't want to remove them then you can remvoe the backups and entries from the Add / Remove Programs list using programs like XP Remove Hotfix Backup.
