Xp partition infected

I have dual boot system - well used Win 7 and newly installed XP. Last night I was just installing antivirus when there was a flurry of warning notices and everything stopped.
1) How best to cure this, if it is even possible

2) can I still use Win 7 partition safely or not?
TIA for rapid response to my stupidity!

A little more info may help

What warning notices?
What do you mean by everything stopped?

Looks like another April fool joke.

What happened is that i was trying to install antivirus program (Avira) onto my XP partition - I am in the process of moving everything off 7 and into XP.
Suddenly, the screen began to fill up with all sorts of warnings, to the effect that I needed to clear absolutely everything off the computer. Malware showed up repeatedly, and no program would open for me. You can imagine I was out of my head with worry. I immediately turned off the system, hoping that 7 , with gigabytes of my data and programs, had not also caught the "infection".
As it happened, a knowledgeable friend helped me to put up better barricades on both partitions.
Seems it was, indeed, some sort of April Fool.
