xp outlook express removing attachments

  broomey2 04:59 12 May 2004

I have just upgraded from Me to XP and am unfamiliar with it. I have sent myself some e-mails with photo attachments, but when I open the e-mails on my home compouter, I get a message telling me that OE has removed unsafe attachments. They are not unsafe, because I sent them, but how do I tell the computer to allow them through?

In outlook express click tools>options>security and then untick "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened..............."

This feature of OE is a waste of time - it regularly prevents the opening of perfectly safe attachments and should be permanently disabled.

If you have the proper AV software and your e-mails are checked as they should be, then you are safe to disable OE's version.

Another important point is to permanently disable the Preview Pane in OE (View>Layout>Disable Preview Pane). If not then just one click on an infected e-mail can set a virus off and running.

If Preview Pane is disabled you can safely view suspicious e-mails by highlighting it in the list of your e-mails, right-clicking and then selecting Properties.

You can then read the header and, by clicking on Message Source, the e-mail itself.

Any doubts and just Cancel twice and then immediately delete the e-mail from the Tool Bar's Delete button.

You can also delete it again in the Deleted file if you with in the same way.

The attachments are not being removed, only prevented from being opened.

if in doubt click on forward and the attachment will become visible.
