Hi, My 5 year old XP laptop hangs on the blue 'Windows XP' screen and does exactly the same when i try to start in safe mode, also the same in 'Last Known Good Configuration'. I do have an OEM XP CD.

Please can i have some/any tips as to what to do?

Sounds to me like a corrupt boot sector on the hard drive, do you know what make of hard drive it is?

Hi, Nope, it still hangs on the same screen.

What next after recovery console please?

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

  1. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

  1. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

  2. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

  3. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Hi, im 80% the way through and i have this message:

'The file hpci.sys' on HPCI Diskette is needed' Type the path....

What can i do now please?

Its not reading the file off the disk click continue

if not too many files do this it will still install ok and this file can be added later so make a note of it.

Thanks for that. However, my only choices are 'ok' and 'cancel' and when i choose 'ok' it just doesn't progress?

If it is paused, does removing and replacing CD help? Maybe even a clean if you are feeling brave (don't scratch it).

Then OK/Cancel again.

Hi, Almost great news!!! Ok, it seems to almost be installed properly but is asking to be connected to the internet to verify Windows but i dont have an ethernet cable and it wont let me past the verification page?

Is there any workaround for this please?
