XP Home virus infection...

  Peter J 21:30 10 Dec 2008

My desktop has become infected with a nasty virus, had Norton, definitions out of date though :(
Symptoms are:
1. Loss of profiles
2. When logged all existing hardware is not found, keeps prompting for 'Add New Hardware Wizard'
3. All system restore points erased.
4. Applications not working, ie all word documents do not auto-open with word, and cannot associate with program.
5. All documents are under compaq_owner and not the user (see 1)
6. Mouse jumping.
7. No IE, no printer connection, no broadband

We uninstalled Norton and installed AVG free, ran scan but nothing found.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Try downloading Doctor Web to a flash drive, or sometimes called a pen drive, and run on the infected PC; click here

If you get internet connection then run scans from Malwarebytes antimalware; click here

AND Superantispyware; click here check the links for free version.
Download both and update then scan.
On Norton check removal tool incase not uninstalled thoroughly; click here
With Norton if you don't disable firewall or AV before uninstalling then they won't uninstall correctly hence the uninstall tool.
