xp hangs when shutting down

When I shut down my HP pavilion zv6571 laptop, it begins the shutdown routine correctly, saves settings, but very often it will stop at the "windows is closing down" message and remain there until the power off button is pressed.

I have tried reformating the drive and reinstalling windows with service pack 2 and running windows update, but the problem still arises sometimes. I have tried updating all drivers, but no better match can be found for any of them. The solutions on HP's support website have all been tried, to no avail.

This has been occuring from when the computer was purchased. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Any advice gratefully received.
