XP driver

I bought my mesh 3 years ago but this week required my first recovery from the CD provided. I had backed up the drivers on a separate cd. My video driver booted up with the blue screen of death and was unusable. Instead I had to uninstall the nvidia 5200 software in device manager and boot up in VGA mode.
Ideally I would have like to solve the nvidia bug by installing the latest 5200 driver from their website but it does not work on my system at least.
Therefore what driver does the XP default to instead? This is initially in large character mode but was changle to a better resolution. The problem now seems to be the jagged and non smooth scrolling. How can I get this to act normally?

The smooth scrolling in the advanced tools has been set.
