xp disc space

  steveredbridge 21:13 22 Apr 2009

I have just formatted the hard drive on a pc that had xp on it and bought an xp os disc.It is all working well apart from the fact that it keeps telling me there is very little disc space left, about 18kb to be precise. first of all hoe do I find out how much disc space I have and secondly, what have I done wrong as the hard disc is 120 gb.

Is the drive partitioned by any chance?

What filesystem is on the drive? FAT32 can only handle partitions of upto 32GB...it wouldn't be difficult to fill that once the OS is on and a few programs installed + music, pics etc...

I don't know the answer to either of these questions and I am not sure how to find out

Double click * my computer*

Hold your cursor over your C drive. What does it say?

Also do you have any other entries in my computer > hard disk drives.

14mb left
1.99gb total size

Right click your hard drive and select properties.
What is the file system?

Is there no other disks mentioned in my computer > hard disk drives?

Also when you have done the above:-

Right click my computer > manage . disk management

Is there a hard disk listed with unallocated space?

Did you FDisk the drive prior to installation. It sounds as if you are using FAT16
