About a year ago I rebuilt a mates box using a Gigabyte GA7VA mobo, Athlon 2000xp 512mb RAM
He wanted to use ME so thats what he got.

It has been working perfectly,

he now wants to upgrade to XP

Backed up and booted from XP disk, we then got messages that setup couldnt copy various files.

I started setup again but with the CD in the other drive, Same Result.

Tried using a different XP CD. Same Result

Put in a different Hard Drive. Same Result

Took out the modem, Same Result

Put in a new Graphics Card Same result.

Set the BIOS to minimum, Same Result

To my mind that leaves 4 possibilities

RAM, CPU, MOBO or Ribbon cables.

Has anybody else come up against this?

Are there any other devices connected, e.g. on USB that have been overlooked? If so remove them.

Alternatively, clean the CD and the drive.

No Its now down to bear bones

Also I have used 2 different disks in 2 seperate drives.

Any other ideas?

The old chestnut "recheck all connections"

Did you partition/format the disk?

  PhiltheFragger 18:06 15 Jul 2004

Yes formatted it using the NTFS filing system.

Did that on both hard drives I used.

Have now replaced all ribbon cables.. Same Result

Have you disabled virus protection in the bios. Windows can not write certain files if it is enabled.

  PhiltheFragger 19:42 15 Jul 2004

Yep thats also disabled

Next please

One stick of ram or two? If two take one out at a time and try. If only one stick, try another stick in.

We're clutching at straws but could there be something "screwy" in the BIOS. It's worth having a look.

Have you cleaned the CD drive lens yet?
