Packard Bell I MEDIA 5061

A friend asked me to see if I could find out what is wrong with her PC. The PC boots to the XP splash screen and stops. On pressing f11 to bring up recovery we are requested to enter the administrator password, my friend insists that she has never entered a password.

This is not too much of a problem as Packard Bell are sending out a recovery disk for her, but I'm a little concerned as to why the problem developed.

She told me that in the space of two days she received 1100 spam emails (more than I receive in an whole year), these she deleted and informs me that none where opened. it was on restarting the PC that her troubles started.

So the question is, is it possible/probable that one or more of these emails are the cause of her problems.

If she has never set a password then just pressing Enter with a blank box should work

If only. Tried that, but no go

The PC boots to the XP splash screen and stops.

Usually a sign of a corrupt driver.

will it boot in safe mode? (tap F8 while booting and select from menu)

or try last Known good configuration from the menu.
