XP 64 selects wrong graphics driver + antivirus

  dms05 17:11 26 Apr 2006

I installed XP 64 on my Acer Aspire 5003 (64 bit AMD Turon) and all went well except for the graphics. The original 32 bit XP installed the correct driver for the correct resolution (SIS M760G at 1280*800) but XP 64 uses the generic VGA driver at a lower resolution (VGA). I can increase this to 1200*800 but the font representations are poor and the text distorted.

Anyone know why XP Home does it OK but XP 64 Pro doesn't?

I was surprised how many 32 bit applications ran first time under the 64 bit OS. Opera v9 beta, Firefox, Thunderbird. However MS say you can't use any 32 bit anti-virus program. Anyone have a suggestion on a 64 bit anti-virus offering?

As I told you in your other thread, you will have driver problems with 64bit XP

woodchip - I made a basic assumption 'my laptop is a 64 bit Turon and the hardware will work with the only 64 bit OS'. That seems to be wrong! So if XP 64 won't work with a very recent 64 bit laptop what will it work with? But thanks for your help.

gOnvs - thanks for the info about AVG. I never realised it was 64 bit proof!

Software\also uses drivers. but not the same soprt as Hardware. But software as to talk to the CPU, that's where a driver comes in
