From my experience when it says to format the disc it is usually knackered!

I have seen several references to users of Win XP being told to format floppies and there does seem to be an issue, but I haven't actually seen a solution. The problem may arise as a result of the disk having originally been formatted in Win 95 (per this article click here )

This Microsoft article also appears to relate to the problem - click here;EN-US;140060

As workaround, can someone with Win 98 put the files from the floppy on to a CD-R so that he can try opening them from that?

The problem at the moment is not Works being unable to open the older files, but XP not reading the floppy.

Forum software messed up the Microsoft URL which after the:

"h t t p: / /" bit is:;EN-US;140060
