using xp home with office xp, word keeps losing any settings I have, ie, I have set my preferred font, measuring units and disabled the create a drawing canvas when inserting an auto shape, next time I load word all the changes have gone and the default settings are there, all help gratefully accepted

Open the Normal.dot file (do a search in Explorer) and change the settings.

Now, save the document and close Word. Re-open Word and the settings should have changed.

Alternatively, rename the Normal.dot file to Normal.old and re-start Word (it will automatically create a new Normal.dot). Change the settings and then close Word.

Re-start and the settings should be OK.

Make your changes and then save as template. You can add extra templates to the normal one. If you always want the chnages update normal. But I have a template for headed paper and one for envelopes.
