Wireless network gradual slow down

Anyone got any ideas on why my desktop wireless connection starts at top speed then ends up as slow as it can go?

Desktop (this is the one that slows down) Win xp Pro service pack 2. Pentium 4: 2.6ghz, 512 Ram.
Equipped with Belkin 54g Wireless LAN card

Laptop (this one maintains its connection speed)
Ergo Mercury 2. Celeron: 1.6, 256 Ram.
Equipped with Origo Wireless LAN card IEEE 802.11b

When conected the Laptop maintains a steady 11.0 Mbps which is its maximum but the desktop with the Belkin card starts at 11.0 Mbps quickly goes to 5.5 then down to 1.0 Mbps where it stays unless I disconnect then reconnect and it starts at 11.0 again then deteriorates to 1.0.

Any ideas folks?

Sounds like it might be signal degredation.
Is you router/access point close to the desktop or somewhere else in the building?

The problem happens even if I am sitting right next to the desktop computer with the lap top on my knee. It is an ad hoc network setup with the desktop connecting to laptop
